Background:

Central Asia is an important region of Eurasia with increasing relevance for the EU from the perspective of connectivity, trade, and energy cooperation. The region is strategically located between Europe, China, Russia, and South Asia, as a trade and investment crossroads. Central Asia is also an important source of energy diversification and supply for international markets. Additionally, Central Asia is a region with great potential for the development of clean energy, where existing water resources, as well as conventional fuels, can be employed to enable decarbonization processes. It is a region of Eurasia that will continue to invite investment from abroad in order to stimulate domestic economies and regional growth, whilst also providing international partners with opportunities to shape the development of its energy markets.

This one-day conference will highlight key trends underpinning the development of the highly interconnected energy sectors in the five Central Asian countries – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

The conference will aim to deliver on the following inter-related investment and policy objectives:

  • Allow the 5 Central Asian countries to present their clean and conventional energy investment priority projects to the EU and other international stakeholders in Brussels
  • Provide a platform for the Central Asian countries to discuss their clean and conventional energy investment priority projects with international financial institutions
  • Facilitate regional cooperation: allow for better-coordinated dialogue on clean and conventional energy investment priority projects for the Central Asian countries at the regional level
  • Elaborate on the interdependence of energy security in Central Asia, as a key factor stimulating regional development and international cooperation
  • Assess prospects for the development of a renewable energy market in the region, including evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of market development, barriers to investment, sources of finance, and policy options based on international best practices.

The conference will also provide strong networking opportunities for clean and conventional energy stakeholders from the Central Asian region with European counterparts, as well as investors and the international financial institutions operating in the region.
