“The social market economy has made Europe not only the third largest economy in the world but also the most equal. But we only have to look around to see that there is still a lot of work to be done. Today in Europe, one in five citizens is at risk of poverty or social exclusion. As Christian Democrats, we understand that our economy and our society can only work if we also focus on social policy. We want to make our social market economy fit for the 21st century," highlights Manfred Weber MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group.

This afternoon, the EPP Group will bring together MEPs with stakeholders and high-level experts in its Conference on ‘A Social Market Economy that Cares’. Among the participants are European Commission Vice-Presidents Margaritis Schinas and Dubravka Šuica. Ahead of the European elections, Chairman Manfred Weber will set out the EPP Group’s key social policy priorities. Panel discussions will then focus on how to best manage the cost of living crisis, secure quality jobs in a future-oriented economy and adapt our businesses to the modern world of work.

“The EPP Group is pushing for a European dialogue on issues that matter most to people. The social market economy and a strong social dialogue are at the heart of our European economy and are key to decent working conditions and economic prosperity. Hard work must pay off. No one should have to worry about paying their bills at the end of the month. That means protecting workers, especially those in new forms of work such as the gig economy, while ensuring that our businesses can operate successfully in an increasingly global market," emphasises Dennis Radtke MEP, the EPP Group spokesman for the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs.
